Continued annual valuation of the subpopulation of European bison (photo)
According to preliminary data, in 2016, the herd was supplemented with 10 calves, and its population is about 90 animals. The vast majority of bison in Vinnytsia region lives in three forest areas and adjoining field and forest land. The area of distribution is about 20 thousand hectares. European bison in the amount of 6 individuals were brought to the Vinnytsia oblast of Volyn in 1979. Due to the annual system of care for a herd of workers of forestry and hunting, the number of animals gradually grew. Calculation of density of three animals per thousand hectares suggests that a subpopulation of Vinnytsia has almost reached the optimum level. According to the Director of SE "Vinnitsa forestry" Taras Yushchinsky in the plans of foresters, a further increase in population and the active relocation of bison to other suitable for living, regions of Ukraine to reduce inbreeding in the herd and to refresh the gene pool. Annually from the regional Fund of environmental protection allocated funds for the protection of this endangered species. In 2016, the allocated amount was 110 thousand hryvnias. In addition, hmelnitski forestry attracts and own funds, in particular for the care of animals purchased special equipment. Feeding animals in the winter is one of the means to achieve balance between the objective of biodiversity conservation and the economic interests of the local population. Nice to know that Vinnitsa became a good shelter for living and breeding of bison, which, after almost complete destruction, was restored in artificial conditions and released into the wild.
