The EU supports the sustainable energy development of Ukrainian cities for future generations

The ceremony of signing the Covenant of mayors took place during the official opening of the European sustainable energy week in Ukraine. The Deputy head of the EU delegation to Ukraine Thomas Frellesen noted that the EU committed to support Ukraine on the path of energy efficiency, in particular its transformation from one of the most energy intensive in a modern European country. Energy reduction is a key factor in energy security and economic development of Ukraine. It will also give the opportunity to citizens to pay their energy bills and not feel abandoned to their fate. If you live in an apartment building, it is important to establish the condominium, which is the main prerequisite for gaining access to the instruments for financing energy efficiency measures. Mr. Melissen also stressed the important role of Ukrainian cities in this context and positively assessed their activity in the framework of the Covenant of mayors. According to the Chairman of Kyiv regional state administration Alexander Gorgan, energy efficiency is inevitable and extremely necessary program for budget savings: "the Signing of the Covenant of mayors 30 Ukrainian cities will be a good investment in the development of renewable sources of energy. This year, Kyiv will spend a great job of energomaterialy objects of the social sphere. In particular, each object will have Energomashexport and fall into the only in Ukraine the system energy monitoring, and we will understand things to work on. The efficiency of each of the mayor largely depend on the steps it performs in the field of energy efficiency". The mayor of Slavutych Yuri Fomichev said: "the City of Slavutych – the youngest city in Ukraine, which joined the Covenant of mayors in 2009. Despite the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and the cessation of production of electricity at the station, before the city has many challenges and overcome them failed due to European initiative. the city attracts not only grant funds but also actively takes loans and allocates funding from its own budget on measures to improve the energy efficiency of municipal and residential sector. In particular, in the framework of the EU "Covenant of mayors – Demonstration projects" the city is actively implementing a project for the modernization of the secondary school ¹2 and kindergarten No. 1 in buildings of the public sector implemented an effective energy management system with the goal of substantial energy savings and budgetary savings". "The situation with the climate and the environment requires immediate change . Energy prices will not lower. The city inherited an outdated and extremely energy-intensive infrastructure. However, on the other hand, possibilities of studying the experiences of cities from the neighbouring countries of the EU. The Covenant of mayors-East (CoM East) project, funded by the European Union, seeks to bring together local, regional and national authorities of the countries of the Eastern partnership for the development of regional policies based on the principles of sustainable energy to reduce the dependence on energy resources, increase energy security and support a global movement in the fight against climate change. "Covenant of mayors – a Demonstration projects" (CoM DeP) programme of the European Union, provides technical and financial assistance 22 Ukrainian cities with a population of 200 thousand inhabitants, which joined the Covenant of mayors and committed itself to implement energy efficiency measures under the action Plans for sustainable energy development. Now 19 demonstration projects implemented in Eastern partnership countries: 11 in Ukraine, 3 in Moldova, 3 in Belarus, 1 in Armenia, 1 in Georgia.
