Chernivtsi: Rotavirus infection and its prevention

In 2015 in Chernivtsi among registered 385 cases of laboratory-confirmed gastroenterokolit (BSE) – 18% was due to rotavirus, and among children under the age of 17 years, that figure has reached 25%, of which often sick children aged 0 to 4 years. In January 2016 registered 13 cases of rotavirus HUCK, for the same period in 2015 – 9. Morbidity is 100% formed at the expense of the child population to 17 years. HUCK rotavirus is a highly contagious disease. The source of infection is patient or carrier. Infection occurs by the fecal-oral route by drinking contaminated drinking water, food and via the transfer of "dirty hands". Sporadic (isolated) cases of rotavirus infection recorded throughout the year. And in the winter-spring period there is a seasonal outbreak. The incubation period (from the moment of penetration of the pathogen until the appearance of the first clinical signs of disease) ranges from 15 hours to 3-5 days. Children get sick more often in the younger age categories (from 6 months to 2 years). The babies feed on mother's milk are less susceptible to this infection. The disease begins acutely. Adult patients indicate even an hour of onset of the disease. Clinical symptoms develop within 12-24 hours. The first manifestations of the disease – vomiting, often without prior nausea, diarrhea with abdominal pain. Repeated vomiting 3-4 times a day, can last for 2-3 days, repeated, usually after the consumption of food or water. The patient's stool have a characteristic kind: abundant, watery, yellow or yellow-green color in the form of a foam with a sharp odor. Later they resemble the stools of cholera patients – type "rice broth". The outside environment the virus enters with secretions of patients. Significant excretion of rotaviruses in the faeces occurs from the first days and even hours after development of clinical signs of the disease. The maximum release observed in the first 3-5 days of onset. These days the patient is most dangerous to others. The diarrhea may last for up to 7-8 days, with a massively contaminated items and the care and the environment, which causes a circulation of the virus in natural conditions. Complicated epidemic situation and the fact that the allocation of rotaviruses is observed also from apparently healthy children and adults, significantly more number of patients. On various objects of environment the virus can survive from 10 to 15 days to 1 month, in faeces from a few weeks up to 7 months. One of the most effective disinfectants, active on rotavirus, which is 95% ethyl alcohol, also they lose their infective activity by boiling for 30 minutes. Some cases, in addition to signs of dyspeptic disorders noted severe weakness in the disease, raising the temperature to 40 degrees, headache, dizziness, weakness (patients complain of not being able to get out of bed, walk to toilet – because legs are "rubbery"). When rotaviruses enteritis may exacerbation of chronic diseases of the digestive system. The normal bacterial microflora of the intestine becomes pathogenic for the organism. The disease takes a severe course as a double infection (bacterial and viral) and in some cases can lead to death. A well-known fact that the disease is easier to prevent than to treat justified in the case of rotavirus infection. Therefore, to prevent disease should: – oversees the children first years of life we adhere strictly to the rules of personal hygiene; – in the infant diet to enjoy high-quality food products; – to drink to drinking water quality; – when you see the "signal" of symptoms definitely seek medical help. When you see the "signal" of symptoms be sure to seek medical help This was reported in the Chernivtsi city Council
