In Lutsk mayor Mykola Romaniuk met with the Polish Karaites

To our city was visited by a delegation of Polish Karaites. During his stay in Lutsk hosted a meeting with city Chairman Mykola Romaniuk, Deputy Andrew Kish, head of Department of international cooperation and project activities Faith Kudryavtseva, the head of culture Department Tetiana Hnativ and the chief of Department of protection of cultural heritage Peter Tranovice. Mayor Mykola Romaniuk congratulated the guests in our city and wished them a pleasant stay. The purpose of the visit of the Polish Karaites told the third Secretary of the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Lutsk Elzbieta Zelnick. “The Consulate of Poland in Lutsk with support of the city Council begins implementation of the project “Lutsk — a multicultural town”. Our goal is to show the past of Lutsk in times when there lived many different nationalities, mutually imbued with culture, language, and confessions. The project foresees meetings with representatives of different nationalities. Decided to start with the Karaites. I think the Lutsk side will be interested to know who the Karaites, as they came here, their heritage,” she said. Elzbieta Zelnick noticed that on the invitation of the Consulate in Lutsk came representatives of the Union of the Karaites of Poland. According to her, these are people whose ancestors lived in our town. Also Elzbieta Zelnick told that tomorrow, April 12, at 14.00 h. in Gallery of arts of the Volyn National Union of artists of Ukraine (vul. Lesya Ukrainka street, 24) will be possible to learn more about Lutsk Karaites. The head of culture Department Tetiana Hnativ said that such an event is very relevant. Luck takes part in the Council of Europe project “Intercultural cities”. He relies on the multiculturalism. Within the project there were several meetings. Tetiana Hnativ noted that the Karaites also played an important role in the history of Lutsk. The project “Lutsk — a multicultural town” is very interesting for us. About the history of the Karaites in Lutsk has told the chief of Department of protection of cultural heritage Peter Tranovich. He noted that 500 years Karaites lived in our town. Lived here approximately 50 families. To our times has left the room Karaite of the commune, but the Church has survived. In Lutsk Karaim street, the place where they once lived. Were in our city and cemetery, where are buried the representatives of this nationality. Peter Tranovich said that now in Lutsk is home to three of the Karaites. Representatives of the delegation of the Polish Karaites said that they prefer to be in luck, because here their ancestors lived. They are trying to preserve their culture. Noticed that, unfortunately, few people know the Karaite language, because their families viscauti from Volhynia, Galicia to a new place of residence is not communicated in their native language. Now in Trakai (Lithuania) organized by school of Karaite language. The participants reported that in Lutsk lived many of the Karaites and this is an important layer of culture their nationality. During the meeting they discussed the question of establishing in Lutsk or memorial information boards, where they could learn about the Karaites, to organize an exhibition in the Museum and so forth. Mayor Mykola Romaniuk said that he would give instructions to the structural units of the city Council to explore the possibility of establishing a memorial plaque, found a good place for it. According to him, it is a good idea, because the Karaites are part of the history of Lutsk. He stressed that such information will be interesting for tourists.
