Decommunization in the Zhytomyr region: the regional Commission decided on new names of streets.
Over 800 streets will be renamed in the Zhytomyr region in the second phase of de-communization. Yesterday, may 16, took place the final meeting of the regional Commission on toponymy. Members considered the proposals for renaming streets districts, also heard the recommendations of the ethnographers and historians. In particular, this applies to streets where the local community are unable to determine the name or decided to leave the old name unchanged. Such streets will be refunded or historical names (which existed even before the communization), or given to new proposals according to ethnographers and historians. Proposals for the renaming of more than 800 streets, as well as the dismantling of monuments and memorials, annotated boards of the regional Commission on toponymy will submit for approval to the Chairman of regional state administration Sergey Moskovskomu. According to the legislation of Ukraine, until may 21, 2016 the Chairman of governors should make the decision and, by order, approve new street names and the objects will be removed.
