In the Ternopil region the evaluation of the Volyn tragedy have given historians, not politicians

Volyn tragedy – one of the most painful in the history of Ukraine and Poland. The memory of those killed in the July 1943 annually celebrated representatives of both countries. Around those events are still going heated debate. But most importantly, to the consciousness of young Ukrainians and poles were not burdened by memories of the tragic periods in their common history. Thus, at the moment both Ukraine and Poland should make efforts to research the historical past. It is important to estimate the Volyn tragedy was removed from the political arena. "The Polish side defends the position that it was genocide of the Ukrainian people. We in turn consider those events is much wider. The main cause was the instigation of the German and Soviet sides to a conflict between Ukrainians and poles. It was mutually beneficial," says doctor of historical Sciences Nikolay Barmak. This topic involves a lot of speculation. In particular, regarding participation in the events of those years, members of the OUN-UPA. In April – may 1943, the poles began to create a fortified "samooborony" base (Przebraze, Malin, IVA, Kupic, Porick the like), which supplied weapons and supported the Germans. These groups often are not engaged in self-defence, and attacks on the nearby Ukrainian village. In addition, part of the Polish minority had cooperated with the Soviet partisans, against which the UPA fought. OUN several times initiated negotiations with the Polish underground on the termination of the fight, but every time on the way was the unwillingness of the poles to renounce Ukrainian lands. Many Ukrainian historians believe that in large measure it is this attitude of the poles, not the radical nationalism of the OUN(b) and operated the UPA was the main reason for the rebels armed actions against the Polish colonies and villages in 1943-1944. After all, the ethnic cleansing of poles not previously planned by the OUN, and were a direct result of the developments already during the German-Soviet war. "This conflict is very in tune with the events that occur in the zone of the ATO. A lot of the atrocities committed against the civilian population, and make them men in uniform with guns. They are fluent in Ukrainian and Russian language. Local residents are hard to figure out who is committing these murders and robberies. Exactly the situation was in those days in Volyn. People from the forest, in uniform, often provoked conflicts in order to set hostile local population", - Mykola Barmak. And despite all the inconsistencies, the Volyn tragedy the common tragic page of the Ukrainian-Polish history. "We should look for common grounds between Ukrainians and poles. So, it is our duty to honor the memory of people who died, to pay tribute to them. But most importantly – we must do everything to not repeated in the future such tragic historical events," - said the Director of the State archive of Ternopil region Fedor Polyanskiy. In his opinion, the point of this story should put the historians of both countries, not politicians. This was reported in the Ternopil regional state administration
