Chernivtsi: the Memo on the prevention of cholera

Cholera is a diarrhoeal disease, developing as a result of infection by the pathogen Vibrio cholerae. Cholera can hurt adults and children. In most cases, infection or cause only mild diarrhoea, or do not have any symptoms symptoms. However, in 5-10% of cases after 6 hours – 5 days after the ingestion of the pathogen, patients develop severe watery diarrhoea and vomiting. To distinguish cholera from other types of gastrointestinal diseases according to symptoms is often not possible without conducting bacteriology (isolation of Vibrio cholerae). A person can get cholera by drinking water or eating foods contaminated with the pathogen. Often sources of foodborne infections include raw products or those which have not passed sufficient heat treatment seafood, fresh fruits and vegetables, and other foods contaminated during preparation or storage. The main source of infection are the vibrios present in the feces of an infected person. The pathogen can also live in the environment, namely in rivers with brackish water and coastal waters. Therefore, in areas where not carried out proper treatment of sewage and drinking water, disease can spread quickly. How to prevent the disease cholera? People living in areas with high risk of disease, can protect themselves from cholera, following a few simple rules of good hygiene and safe cooking. These rules include thorough handwashing, especially before preparing food and immediately before eating, proper heat treatment of products and their consumption in hot, boiling or special treatment of drinking water, and the use of hygiene products. Adhering to some basic preventive measures, persons who travel can also protect themselves from cholera and other diseases transmitted through food and water. You must follow a simple rule: If the product is not to boil, to boil/to cook and clean (from the skin, peel, etc), it cannot be eaten. When bathing in ponds and pools, avoid getting water in your mouth. Observe elementary rules of personal hygiene (wash hands thoroughly before eating or cooking, after using the toilet); Engage in activities to combat flies. According to information provided by the Chernivtsi city Department laboratory investigations SE "Chernivtsi regional laboratory center of the Ministry of health of Ukraine" during the bathing season 2016 18 investigated river water samples – on the physico-chemical and microbiological indicators, 12 – parasitological indices and 6 – viral indicators. Deviation installed in 3 water samples on sanitary-chemical and 15 – on microbiological indicators. Also studied 4 soil samples for physico-FMC, microbiological and parasitological indices and 2 samples for virological indicators. Deviations from standards were identified. In addition, in the framework of the monitoring of the circulation of infectious diseases on the territory of Chernivtsi region, studies of water open ponds to determine bacterial contamination, including circulation of Vibrio cholerae. In the implementation of laboratory control 02.08.2016 of two river water samples (the place of sewage s. Customs, urban beach Chernivtsi) allocated to non-epidemic strain of Vibrio cholerae. On the water quality of informed KP "Chernivtsivodokanal" and the proposal to strengthen control over quality of wastewater treatment. Given the above, guided by article 18 of the law of Ukraine "On ensuring sanitary and epidemiological welfare of population" and Annex 11 of the DSP Planning and development of settlements" approved by order MZ of Ukraine from 19.06.1996 ¹173 in conjunction with the management concerning emergency situations and civil protection of the population decided to extend the ban on swimming, to repeated laboratory tests and obtain results that meet the requirements of sanitary norms.
