Sergey Savchuk: Ukraine adopts the experience of Finland in the replacement of gas with alternative fuels

Yesterday, 29 March, heading an official delegation of Ukraine in Helsinki (Finland), Chairman of the Saee Serhiy Savchuk took part in the North-Baltic bioenergetics conference. The key themes of the event were the policy of substitution of traditional energy resources, alternative fuels and the development of markets for biomass, high efficiency cogeneration, biofuels. "In the Baltic sea region is actively developing bio-energy. Finland is one of the leading countries in this matter. In 2015 the share of "green" energy in final energy consumption of Finland was 39.3%, of which about 80% is derived from biomass, – said the Head of the Agency. – For Ukraine, which has considerable potential for the use of wastes of agriculture and forestry, the Finnish experience in the production of energy from alternative fuels is extremely useful." As explained by Sergey Savchuk, the total potential of agricultural waste in Ukraine is estimated at 93.5 million tonnes, of which, in particular cereal straw and 42% of the waste corn – 34%, sunflower waste – 17%. Using the energy needs of only 37% agricultural crop residues, has the potential to replace more than 9 billion m3 of gas per year. An additional source of biomass is the cultivation of energy crops on marginal lands, which in Ukraine is about 4 million hectares. "When grown on 1 million hectares of energy crops can replace up to 5.5 billion m3 of gas per year", – said S. Savchuk. The head of the Agency also said that Ukraine and Finland have already started cooperation in the field of renewable energy. In the framework of the signed in January 2017 Memorandum of understanding between the Saee and the Ministry of foreign Affairs of Finland will exchange experiences and knowledge concerning public policies and mechanisms to encourage the development of "green" energy, promote the implementation of joint projects, participation in various public events. "During his visit to Finland together with representatives of the foreign Ministry of Finland and leading Finnish companies, we will discuss technical solutions and economic models of heat production from alternative sources, stimulating instruments for market development of biomass, mechanisms of development of high-efficiency cogeneration in Ukraine", - said the Chairman of the Agency. In total, the conference more than 100 representatives of EU Governments, leading companies-producers of energy from renewable sources, international organizations and experts reviewed the current situation in the European bioenergy market in 2017, its role in the implementation of EU policy in the field of energy efficiency and renewable energy, as well as ways to encourage countries to use alternative fuels. This was reported in the Vinnytsia regional state administration
