First in Chernivtsi "Threshold of pam’yati" coming soon

July 2, in front of the entrance to the future movie arts center, named after Ivan Mykolaichuk, which is 140 Main street, will take place the solemn laying of the memorial sign "stolperstein" (translated from German – "threshold block" or "memory threshold"), which should remind the current generations of Chernivtsi on thousands of Jewish residents who were deported 75 years ago, the Romanian regime of Marshal ion Antonescu in the ghettos and camps of Transnistria. For this purpose, on the initiative of the Museum of history and culture of Bukovinian Jews on the invitation of the Chernivtsi city Council, the arrival of the author of the idea of honoring in such way the memory of the victims of the genocides committed by the Nazis during the Second world war – a well-known German architect g?nter Demn. By tradition, he himself will lay a memorial sign made in Germany in the form of an oblong bronze plates with engraved lettering. Therefore, Chernivtsi will be 1101 place in Europe, and 2 city in Ukraine (after the Pereyaslav-Khmelnitsky), where there are such signs. The choice of time and place is not accidental. After all, about the place where in Soviet times was built cinema "Friendship", which later received the name of Ivan Mykolaychuk, in pre-war time was the stadium of the popular Jewish sports Association "Maccabi". Due to the proximity of the latter to the railway station Chernivtsi-South (at that time – Radna the Audience") it was used by the Romanian military authorities as the Assembly point, which after the roll call and baggage inspection in Chernivtsi Jews trains went to the East before crossing the Dniester. Deportation continued every Saturday during June 1942. During one of the last events, namely the 28th of June, that Assembly point was in Chernivtsi young poets budding Selma Merbaum-Izer and Immanuel Vases with the families, the parents of Paul Celan and Peter Demant. The solemn ceremony of the memorial sign “Stolperstein” will be held near the former stadium of the Jewish sports Association “Maccabi” (street Main, 140). The entrance is free. This was reported in the Chernivtsi city Council
