The sacrament of marriage: what is it?

Wedding is not just a beautiful ceremony or tradition. It is the Church's great Sacrament by which the couple receive the grace of God.

Wedding, or the Sacrament of marriage is one of the seven main Sacraments of the Orthodox Church. The bride and groom, United in love and mutual consent, when free in front of the priest and the Church the promise of fidelity in the Sacrament of marriage receive the grace of God to have a happy marriage, blessed is the birth and upbringing of future children.

Engagement represent a natural marriage that God has established between Adam and eve, with the purpose of procreation. Engagement is evidenced by the recognition of the Church of those mutual intentions and feelings of the bride and groom, which they fasten in the temple in front of everyone. The Holy Church confirms the sincerity of their each other of the vow of his blessing and prayers.

why the need For witnesses?

in pre-revolutionary Russia (at a time when the Church had a civil marriage and legal force), a wedding in a mandatory order were committed with the guarantors, the witnesses who participated in the rank of the Ordinances and their signatures in the register was confirmed by the act of wedding. Currently, the participation of witnesses in the Sacrament is not compulsory and is determined by the wishes of the couple.

According to the canons, the Sacrament of marriage is not carried out:

  • during the 4-positions;
  • during carnival (right before Lent);
  • Christmas  (from 07.01 to 19.01);
  • during Easter (Bright) week;
  • on Saturdays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and before  the temple, large and dvunadesyatye holidays;
  • in the days and eve of  the exaltation of the Holy cross and the beheading of John the Baptist (10.09, 11.09, 26-and 27.09 .09).
