Chernigov: European local democracy week
the period from 11 to 15 October in the libraries of the Chernihiv conducted educational activities to the European week of local democracy. Thus was celebrated the pan-European initiative which helps to maximize the dissemination of the democratic principles of our country, the role of democracy in the development of our country at the European level, the role of local government and society in the governance of the country and the city. "European local democracy week" is a new political initiative of the Council of Europe, which was initiated by the Congress of local and regional authorities of the Council of Europe and the European Committee on local and regional democracy. This event is annually organized by the local authorities of all member States of the Council of Europe to promote principles of local democracy and promote the democratic participation of citizens in public life at local level. In support of this initiative of the Council of Europe issued a presidential Decree from September 27, 2007, No. 922 "About the European week of local democracy". The main objectives of the European week of local democracy in Ukraine were identified: - increase awareness among citizens of European States in relation to the activities of local Executive authorities and opportunities to participate in decision-making at the local level. - increasing awareness among citizens of European States in relation to the activities of local Executive authorities and opportunities to participate in decision-making at the local level; - encouraging local councillors and civil servants to participate in the democratic process at the local level with the aim of introduction of standards of public ethics as the basis of relations with citizens; - development of local democracy as a component of a democratic Europe and of informing the public about the role of the Council of Europe in this process. In the framework of the European week of local democracy for one or several days it is possible to conduct a variety of activities: dissemination of information, open days, debates with representatives of local authorities, competitions, educational games and the like. Special attention is paid to attraction of young citizens to public political life at the local level, the development of participatory democracy and the like. The first European week of local democracy in Ukraine was held on 15 - 22 October 2007 In most regions was successfully implemented a number of activities that contributed to the involvement of citizens, young people to local government and a better realization of the European vector of development of our state.
