Chernivtsi community will receive financial and expert support from the Council of Europe for the implementation of local initiatives

Chernivtsi in the top five of Ukrainian communities that will receive financial and expert support to implement local initiatives to make their governance more open, inclusive, transparent and accountable to communities, taking into account gender balance. In the framework of the Forum of local democracy, the Head of the Council of Europe office in Ukraine Morten Enberg signed a Memorandum of understanding with the city heads of the five selected communities that will implement the initiative. "Democracy starts at the local level – said Gudrun Mosler-Tornstrom, President of Congress – and that should be followed for effective action". Congress proposes standards and tools in order to most effectively meet the needs of communities. Initiatives will be implemented in the framework of the project "Promoting local democracy in Ukraine", which is part of the action Plan of the Council of Europe for Ukraine for 2015-2017. The project aims to introduce the principles of democracy in Ukraine by strengthening institutional and leadership skills of local elected representatives (municipal chairmen and members) and dissemination of best practices of local democracy. Apart from Chernivtsi will get support: Baranovka Zhytomyr region, Kremennaya of Lugansk region, Pervomaisk of the Nikolaev area and Fastiv, Kyiv region.
